The Thyroid and Metamedicine: a journey between body and emotions

The thyroid is a small but crucial gland for our bodies, and problems with the thyroid, whether hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, or nodules, are considered signals that the body sends us to signal inner conflicts, often related to emotional experiences or ingrained beliefs.

In this article we will explore together the function of the thyroid gland and what it might mean when this gland goes into trouble, according to Metamedicine. We will go over not only the physical and biological aspects of the thyroid gland, but also how its issues may reflect emotional and psychological themes.

What is the Thyroid?

Let’s start with ABC simplified and “by keywords” (so you can begin to familiarize yourself with this organ).

The thyroid gland is a small endocrine gland located at the front of the neck, just below the Adam’s apple. Although it is small, its function is vital to our bodies. The thyroid gland produces key hormones that regulate metabolism and many other body functions, such as body temperature and heart rate.

Function of the Thyroid

The main hormones that the thyroid gland produces are thyroxine (T4 ) and triiodothyronine (T3), which control:

  • Metabolism: The rate at which the body burns calories.
  • Body temperature: They help maintain a constant body temperature.
  • Heart: They regulate the heart rate.
  • Growth and development: Essentials for brain development in children.

How Does the Thyroid Work?

The thyroid gland is regulated by a complex system involving the hypothalamus and pituitary gland, two glands that communicate with it to keep thyroid hormone levels in balance. When the body needs more thyroid hormones, the pituitary gland releases TSH hormone to stimulate the thyroid; when there are too many, TSH release decreases.

ABCs of the most common thyroid disorders: hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism and nodules

  1. Hypothyroidism – When the thyroid gland does not produce enough hormones.
  • Symptoms: Fatigue, weight gain, dry skin, depression.
  • Cause: Autoimmune disease (such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis) or iodine deficiency.
  1. Hyperthyroidism – When the thyroid gland produces too many hormones.
  • Symptoms: Weight loss, anxiety, rapid heartbeat, tremors.
  • Cause: Autoimmune disease (such as Basedow’s disease) or thyroid nodules.
  1. Thyroid nodules – Small masses or enlargements of the thyroid gland.
  • Symptoms: Difficulty swallowing or breathing, sometimes asymptomatic.
  • Cause: In many cases benign, but need monitoring.

Metamedicine and the Thyroid.

According to Metamedicine, the thyroid gland is related to two main issues that affect our lives:

The relationship with time and the ability to express oneself.

1. The thyroid gland and the weather

The thyroid, being involved in metabolism, symbolically reflects our relationship with time. If the thyroid is not functioning as it should, it could be a sign that something in our lives has to do with the way we experience time.

  • Hypothyroidism: When the thyroid is under active, it is associated with a slowdown in time. It could indicate a person who is afraid to take action or who feels blocked in achieving his or her dreams, as if he or she needs more time or permission from others to live his or her life.
  • Inner message: “I do not allow myself to live my time.”
  • Hyperthyroidism: When the thyroid is overactive, however, time seems to speed up. The person may feel overwhelmed by the fear of missing opportunities and believes he or she must do everything quickly so as not to fall behind.
  • Inner message: “I have to do everything right away, otherwise it will never be enough.”

2. The Thyroid and Expressing Yourself.

The thyroid is located in the neck, an area symbolically linked to communication andexpression of inner truth. If the thyroid becomes diseased, it could be a sign that there are difficulties in sincerely communicating what we feel or living in tune with our most authentic desires.

  • Hypothyroidism: People with hypothyroidism may feel as if they do not have the strength or freedom to express themselves, as if they cannot make themselves heard in the world. They may be afraid to speak openly about how they feel or to follow their desires.
  • Inner message: “I am afraid of being seen or heard. I hold myself back.”
  • Hyperthyroidism: In contrast, those with hyperthyroidism may feel compelled to speak and act too quickly so as not to lose ground. There may be an inner pressure to “do more” without giving room for deep reflection.
  • Inner message: “I can’t afford to stop, I have to run.”
  • Nodules or Thyroid Tumors: Often related to feelings of unspoken anger or sadness. People with nodules or thyroid tumors may have repressed strong emotions or not found the courage to speak their truth, for fear of being judged or hurting others.
  • Inner message: “I hold back for fear of disturbing others.”

Reflections

Dealing with the thyroid therefore means not only focusing on the physical and hormonal side. It also means, if you want to operate on an integrated, synergistic, and holistic level, exploring the emotions that might be behind its malfunction.

The thyroid is a powerful symbol of our relationship with time and our ability to express ourselves fully in life.

DEEPENING FOR CYCLICAL WOMEN

For those who have read or will read my book on female cyclicity. The Handbook of Cyclicity the Pleasure of Being a Woman (also available in Spanish on amazon.es), you will see that in the chapter devoted to the IRREGULAR CYCLE, that is, a cycle that can be longer shorter than 28/32 days, the theme of the relationship with time is very detailed. Remember that the menstrual cycle is closely connected with the thyroid

When the thyroid gland is not functioning properly, it can disrupt the delicate balance of hormones involved in the menstrual cycle, causing irregularities or other problems.

I will be doing content dedicated to THYROID AND MESTRUAL CYCLE as part of the MISTERY FEMININE column that you can always find sl YouTube channel, in the playlist dedicated to the all-around feminine.

If the body sends us signals, as in the case of thyroid dysfunction, it is important to ask what emotional and psychological conflicts might be behind it.

I invite you to reflect on some questions:

  1. Repressed emotions: Are there any emotions that you have difficulty expressing?
  2. Authenticity: Are you living in tune with your deepest desires?
  3. Relationship to time: How do you relate to time? Do you feel you have enough of it to do what you desire?

By addressing these issues, you may find new keys to better understand your body and the message the thyroid is trying to communicate to you. And if you’d like, we can explore together in session.

Good exploration and good listening to yourself.
